As data centers rapidly scale to support artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, and ever-increasing rack densities, the importance of liquid cooling grows. From direct-to-chip cold plates to immersion baths and traditional chilled-water loops, advanced cooling systems are now central to maintaining operational stability. But one critical factor is often overlooked: liquid cleanliness directly affects reliability, thermal efficiency, and infrastructure longevity.
At Particle Technology Labs (PTL), we specialize in analyzing particle size and concentration in liquid samples. With over thirty years of experience in particle characterization, we provide the insight that engineers and operators need to keep their cooling systems clean and efficient. So, why is the purity of a data center’s cooling liquid so vital, and what can PTL do to help you ensure that yours is clean? PTL has the answers you need.
Protecting System Components
Modern cooling systems rely on many precisely engineered components, but critically, they are often driven by cold plates with very narrow microchannels. Even small levels of contamination from particulate matter can cause significant harm to the system, including:
- Clogging of the microchannels
- Abrasive wear on pumps
- Restricted flow
- Failure of seals, valves, and tubing
Impurities introduced to the system can also accelerate corrosion throughout the cooling loop. Corrosion can create:
- Coolant leaks
- Surface pitting in cold plates
- Premature failure of pumps and exchangers
Contaminants like sediment, corrosion byproducts, and environmental debris increase mechanical stress and accelerate wear. Clean coolant helps preserve the entire cooling infrastructure, reducing unplanned outages and extending component lifespans.
PTL’s experience measuring liquid particle size and concentration spans from our work with environmental and wastewater filtration systems to medical devices. As the landscape shifts around AI, PTL is becoming a valuable partner to data center engineers looking to understand the cleanliness and health of their cooling systems.

Maximizing Thermal Performance
Cooling efficiency depends on unobstructed heat transfer. When particulate accumulates in liquid systems, insulating layers can form, undermining performance. Dirty coolant may lead to:
- Higher operating temperatures
- Reduced cooling capacity
- Localized hot spots
- Increased risk of thermal throttling or shutdowns
By maintaining clean fluid, data centers can ensure that their cooling systems perform at the highest capacity, which is critical for supporting high-density computing loads.
For decades, PTL has helped automotive, aerospace, and data center engineers understand the performance of their liquid cooling systems through our expertise in particle characterization, and our clients return to us time and time again for our reliable, quality results.
Particulate Contamination Size and Concentration
PTL uses single particle optical sensing (SPOS) to measure particulate matter in water and other liquid samples every day. This technique uses light extinction (or light obscuration) to measure particles larger than 1.5 microns and light scattering for particles smaller than 1.5 microns, and it can be used to provide not only particle size data but also concentration. SPOS is a highly sensitive technique, ideal for identifying the presence of outlier particles within the range of 0.5 to 400 microns or 1.5 to 400 microns.
For a wider range of sizes, PTL offers a full menu of particle testing options; however, the contamination in liquid coolant samples is sometimes too dilute for certain techniques. Contact our team of experts to find out which technique is the best fit for your needs!
